Practical fire extinguishing drill for hot work
The hot work certificate requires a documented extinguishing drill in addition to the theory. With Sertio you pick the venue and date yourself, we confirm by email, and after the drill we register you with the Norwegian Fire Protection Association (Brannvernforeningen).
Why is a practical drill required?
Since 2026, no hot work certificate is issued without a documented practical extinguishing drill. The requirement applies to everyone doing hot work at temporary workplaces – welding, grinding, soldering and other work involving heat.
Certification has two parts: the theory course with a passed theory exam, and a practical drill where you extinguish a fire with a hand-held extinguisher under supervision. The drill is completed within three months before or after the theory course.
Once both parts are documented, Brannvernforeningen issues the certificate. It is valid for five years.
The course diploma (kursbevis) you receive from Sertio after passing the theory exam is not the certificate. The certificate is issued by Brannvernforeningen once the drill is registered as well.

The drill itself
The drill takes about two hours. Bring valid ID. Ordinary work clothes are fine.
Registration with Brannvernforeningen
After the drill, Sertio registers you with Brannvernforeningen, which issues the certificate.
Two ways to practise
Brannvernforeningen approves both drills with VR extinguishing equipment and traditional drills with real extinguishers. Both lead to the same certificate.
VR extinguishing drill
A realistic simulation with VR extinguishing equipment that reproduces the weight, grip and technique of a real hand-held extinguisher. Held indoors at Sertio in Oslo – or at your workplace.
