Why is a practical drill required?

Since 2026, no hot work certificate is issued without a documented practical extinguishing drill. The requirement applies to everyone doing hot work at temporary workplaces – welding, grinding, soldering and other work involving heat.

Certification has two parts: the theory course with a passed theory exam, and a practical drill where you extinguish a fire with a hand-held extinguisher under supervision. The drill is completed within three months before or after the theory course.

Once both parts are documented, Brannvernforeningen issues the certificate. It is valid for five years.

The course diploma (kursbevis) you receive from Sertio after passing the theory exam is not the certificate. The certificate is issued by Brannvernforeningen once the drill is registered as well.

Two ways to practise

Brannvernforeningen approves both drills with VR extinguishing equipment and traditional drills with real extinguishers. Both lead to the same certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to take the practical drill?

Yes. Since 2026 the hot work certificate requires a documented practical extinguishing drill in addition to a passed theory exam. Without the drill, Brannvernforeningen does not issue a certificate.

How long does the drill take?

Allow about two hours. The extinguishing itself is quick, but you get a briefing, several attempts and documentation in the same session.

VR or real extinguishers – are both approved?

Yes. Brannvernforeningen approves both drills with VR extinguishing equipment and traditional drills with real extinguishers. Both lead to the same certificate.

I took the theory elsewhere. Can I do only the drill with you?

Yes. Book the practical drill on its own. You do not need Sertio's online course to take the drill, but the theory course must be completed within three months before or after the drill.

I have already done a drill with my employer or another provider. What now?

Upload the documentation from the drill in your dashboard. We check it and register you with Brannvernforeningen without you having to repeat the drill.

What should I bring?

Valid ID and ordinary work clothes. For the traditional drill we recommend clothes that can get dirty. We provide all equipment.

What if more than three months pass between the theory course and the drill?

The drill must be completed within three months before or after the theory course to count together with the course. If it takes longer, contact us and we will find a solution – so book the drill as soon as you can.

How do I renew the certificate after five years?

Recertification means doing the full course again: the online course with theory exam and the practical drill. The Complete package covers both.
